As it is written in Greek mythology, Zeus as a child was born to Cronus and Rhea. In fact, Zeus was their youngest child. Greek mythology also states that Crete is his place of birth. It is said that there are two caves in the mountains of Crete and one of them must have been Zeus’s birthplace. This may have been the case as Cronus, who was the father of Zeus was cursed that he would be eventually overthrown by one of his son’s and in order to prevent this from happening he would swallow his children whole.

Before Zeus, five children had already met the same fate. Thus, when Rhea was pregnant with Zeus, she escaped with him as she did not want him to share the same fate. For her escape she sought the help of her parents Ouranos and Gaia. Her parents advised her to hide in a cave in Crete mountain and give birth to the child in one of the caves. During the labor process the entrance of the cave was guarded by the Cueretes.

Soon after giving birth to Zeus, Rhea handed over her child to the Curetes. They began stamping their hooves heavily to mask the cry of bay Zeus. Rhea then returns to Cronus with a stone, masking it. She gave this to Cronus telling her it was their child. Cronus without thinking much of it swallowed the stone. He was now relaxed believing that all his children had been swallowed and thus he was safe from being dethroned.

Later on Zeus also becomes the king of gods. To know how you can read my blog.
